Professional Window and Door Services
in Massachusetts

Windows and doors are where most Massachusetts homes lose energy and let weather in. Old single pane windows leak heat all winter and cool air all summer. Aging exterior doors warp, sag, and let drafts through gaps that close on a piece of paper. Worse, when these units are installed wrong, water gets behind the casing and rots the framing around the opening.

We do three categories of work on this service. Window replacement, where the existing window comes out and a new unit goes in, usually with new flashing and trim. Exterior door installation, including front doors, side entry, and patio doors. Storm door installation as a separate piece for added weather protection on older entry doors. Each one has its own install requirements and its own failure modes.

Energy efficiency is the number one reason homeowners call us about windows. A double pane unit with a low emissivity coating, argon gas fill, and a tight install can cut heating bills significantly compared to old single pane windows. The ENERGY STAR rated units we install are tested for our climate zone and carry warranties on the glass and the frame.

Window and Door Installation

Window installation starts with the rough opening. We pull the existing window out, inspect the framing for rot or water damage, and address anything that needs to be fixed before the new unit goes in. Then we install proper flashing tape around the opening, set the new window in plumb and level, shim it to specification, and seal the perimeter with low expansion foam.

Door installation has the same approach with different details. The threshold has to be flashed properly because that is where water collects when wind drives rain against the front of the house. We integrate the threshold flashing with the wall water barrier so any water that gets past the door bottom drains out rather than sitting on the subfloor.

Storm doors get installed as a secondary layer over a primary entry door. They add insulation value, protect the primary door from weather, and let you keep an interior door open for ventilation in spring and fall. We size the storm door to fit tight against the existing door frame and adjust the closer so the door closes without slamming.

Window and Door Replacement Process

Replacement window jobs come in two main types. Insert replacements where we install a new window into the existing frame, which is faster and cheaper but only works if the original frame is sound. Full frame replacements where we tear the old unit and frame out and start fresh in the rough opening. Full frame is the right call when the original frame is rotted.

Door replacement usually involves replacing the entire unit because the slab and frame work together as a system. We measure the existing rough opening, order a unit that fits, remove the old door and frame, address any rot in the framing or sill, and install the new unit with proper flashing. Pre hung doors make this work faster and more accurate.

Window and door issues often connect to other exterior problems. A leak around a window usually means the original flashing was inadequate or the trim has failed. A drafty door often comes with rot in the threshold. We address these connected issues during the replacement so you do not pay for a new window and then find out the wall around it needs work too.

Why Window and Door Quality Matters in Massachusetts

Massachusetts winters expose every gap in a window or door install. Cold air finds the smallest opening and drafts get noticeable fast. The weatherstripping that worked in November shrinks in January and starts letting cold air through. Glass that is not properly sealed condenses moisture between panes. Doors that close fine in summer bind in winter when the framing shifts.

Energy code in Massachusetts has specific U factor and SHGC requirements for windows and doors in residential construction. New windows have to meet these efficiency standards to pass inspection on permitted work. We check the ratings before we order so the install passes inspection and qualifies for any utility rebates available in Massachusetts.

Security is the third reason quality matters on doors. A new exterior door with a properly installed deadbolt, solid strike plate, and reinforced hinges is significantly harder to break through than the typical builder grade door on a thirty year old home. We install these details correctly because security is part of doing the door install right, not an add on.
